About Ness Lockyer

Ness Lockyer is a Tasmanian artist working in oil, graphite and charcoal. Known for her highly detailed portraits and figurative works, she is drawn to the stories people carry with them—their experiences, identities, relationships and the marks life leaves behind.

Working from her West Tamar studio, Ness creates contemporary realist works that celebrate the individuality and humanity of her subjects.

Before focusing on fine art, Ness built a successful ceramics business and developed a loyal following through her handmade work. While creativity remained at the centre of everything she made, drawing and painting had always been a constant presence.

In 2025, she made the decision to devote herself fully to fine art, returning to portraiture and large-scale figurative work. The transition marked the beginning of a new chapter—one focused on observation, storytelling and the challenge of capturing people with honesty and depth.

Portraiture offers an opportunity to look beyond appearances and explore the individuality of each subject. Ness is particularly interested in the ways people express identity through body language, personal style, tattoos and the objects they surround themselves with.

Through careful observation and a commitment to realism, her work seeks to create portraits that feel both intimate and enduring.

Ness is currently developing a growing body of portrait work and pursuing opportunities through exhibitions and major Australian art prizes. Her practice continues to evolve as she explores new subjects, larger formats and increasingly ambitious projects.

Whether through oil paint, graphite or charcoal, her goal remains the same: to create work that invites people to slow down, look closely and connect with the stories of others.
